Is this an example of loving thy neighbor?

Whiteboard portrate Asked by filletofspam 2 months ago, 23 answers.

Pastor Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe AZ recently preached that he hated Barack Obama and asked his followers to join him in praying for President Obama's death. Is this sort of thing Jesus would do?

People made religion, not God. How can you be so self righteous to believe that YOUR God is the RIGHT God, the ONLY God? YOUR religion the only RIGHT religion? Let me guess, the BIBLE told you so. In case you didn't know, there are many other holy texts other than the bible and they are all the accounts of mortal human beings, not God. Many things get misinterpreted and the truth, if there is any, gets twisted. So, according to Prophet matt18091, some one of another faith can be 'on fire for God' and still be an enemy of God because they are not a Christian? It's this way of thinking that makes me thank God I'm not a Christian. If you want to believe Christianity is the only right religion and the bible is the only correct and true interpretation of God's word, which BRANCH of Christianity is the right one, o wise one?

Oh, and don't worry about me. I AM thinking about my life and the choices I make and the way I live. Unlike some people who behave as sheep, following the leader without one glance at the possibility that another way of thinking may be beneficial.

Finally, to answer filetofspam's question, no. That is not something Jesus would do. He'd be performing magic tricks outside of Caesar's Palace saying 'C'mon Dad, who cares about the president of the stupid United States. Pick a card. Any card...'.

Well...

Presuming that Jesus did in fact exist, I don't think that (once again presuming) if he is a god he will participate in judging a human being.

Oh and I agree with mikeh...it seems to me that you want to stir things up a bit.

I take it that it's a rhetorical question filletofspam, if not my apologies. I would like to think that the Jesus of the New Testament would be disgusted with Anderson's behaviour. And it is a legitimate question, don't see any problem with it.

bmmc, you acknowledge this post as both legitimate AND rhetorical. If a question is asked for the purpose of rhetoric, how on earth could it be a genuine request for information?

Please do not answer. That was rhetorical.

A rhetorical question can be used to get a healthy debate going Mike (ok if I use your name?). Check out the Socratic Dialogues if you don't don't believe me. I understand you occupy an important position on this website and that you are very conscious of that fact so I respect your opinions and feelings. That's not rhetorical.

well this is the thing that gets me about some -christians-

they preach that you must act a certain way and abide by all these rules including thought and actions. yet here is a great example of your typical god fearing hypocrite. and no it would not be the godly thing to do. im not christian, yet I have more decensy to not publicly nor privately wish for the death of anyone.

ha! I guess if your everyday life consists of following the word of god and its precious bible, that so often contradicts itself, one can not help to be such a hypocrite being that the advice you follow is pure hypocracy in itself.

HATE, BLASPHEMY, DEATH???

Are you kidding? Check out the Westboro Baptist Church. What follows is just one of the messages of hatred against the Holocaust Memorial given by their pastor.

'Whatever righteous cause the Jewish victims of the 1930s–40s Nazi Holocaust had, (probably minuscule, compared to the Jewish Holocausts against Middle Passage Blacks, African Americans and Christians—including the bloody persecution of Westboro Baptist Church by Topeka Jews in the 1990s), has been drowned in sodomite semen. American taxpayers are financing this unholy monument to Jewish mendacity and greed and to filthy fag lust. Homosexuals and Jews dominated Nazi Germany . . . The Jews now wander the earth despised, smitten with moral and spiritual blindness by a divine judicial stroke . . . And God has smitten Jews with a certain unique madness . . . Jews, thus perverted, out of all proportion to their numbers energize the militant sodomite agenda... Jews are the real Nazis.

Fundamentalist whacko christians, just like any other religious zealots, spread all kinds of hatred and racism...

Some of the 'christians' on this site have said some horrible things...
just a few quotes that I have collected...
ALL WERE POSTED BY CHRISTIANS...
ALL DENIGRATE OTHER RELIGIONS...

***The quran is false, not of God but teaches lies from Satan.

***I'll pick Jesus any time over your false god allah

***Muslims worship allah who teaches death to infidals! Muslims believe the Quran is holy and sacred, right.

***Religion such as this (Islam)...needs to be stopped!

***God help those who believe this sick religion (Islam)!

***the RCC (Roman Catholic Church) is not considered true Christianity

***The anti christ will be of jewish decent

Well one aspect of a godly man's attitude is hatred for God's enemies and fervent prayer for their downfall and destruction.

If your not a christian not matter what religion you are your an enemy of God.

But I'll have to agree that praying for Obama's death is wrong. Rather He should be praying for his destruction or even a change of heart.

Destruction doesn't necessarily mean death. It is often defined as a cause of ruin.

There are many times in the bible when followers of Christ have prayed for the destruction of God's enemies.

As read in the following passages...

Ps. 5:10, 10:15, 35:1-8,22-26, 59:12-13; 68:1-4, 69:22-28, 83, 94, 109, 137:8-9, 139:19-24, 140:6-11.

Ugh.. Sorry but it's true. It says it in the bible. That's just the way it is...

Either your on fire for Him or stone cold. No grey areas.. Just black and white.

Don't like it? Perhaps you should re-think your life. =[

It doesn't matter which branch just as long as they acknowledge that Christ is the true and living GOD and has no others gods before HIM. The main difference between the churches is the belief in the end times and baptism.

So there are grey areas then, even in mighty Christianity? Some Christians believe you must be baptized to go to heaven and others don't. Who has it right? Will some Christians go to hell if they aren't baptized even though they acknowledge Christ and worship no other gods? The point of all this is that NO ONE has it right. There is no RIGHT and WRONG. There is only faith and you can't force someone to believe something they can't or don't want to.

I'll be the first to admit I don't know everything. Compared to all the knowledge in the world, I know practically nothing. But since you are a good close personal friend of God and know exactly how he sees everything, you know it all. Be sure you say 'hi' for me on your next poker night.

The government should revoke their tax-exempt status. They aren't a church, they're extremists...

Praying for someone to die, is an example of cursing, and/or taking God's name in vain.
