Those who think that suicide is selfish and stupid have obviously never been severely manic or depressed. Suicide is the symptom of a larger disease and not something that a healthy person just wakes up one day and decides to do for attention or fun.

You wouldn't laugh at or scorn someone whose hair fell out because of cancer treatments. Why then would you laugh at or scorn someone who attempted/completed suicide?

I believe so- it's a coward's way out. Sure, you might not have to deal with your problems anymore, but they get shifted on to other people. Not only that, but you're making them have to deal with the fact that you're now gone.

and if you think that someone else is going to commit suicide, let them know that you love them

I don't think it's selfish. I've tried to kill myself twice before because I feel life would be better without me and if anyone said that I was being selfish, I'd say how could they possibly understand how I feel because they don't. I didn't need people telling me I'm selfish because I wanted to end my miserable life. If they wanted me to stay alive, then why do they treat me like crap?
those people who refer to the one who tried to kill themself are selfish for wanting to keep this person alive despite all she/he has been through. If one really wants to die to end their suffering why should they be considered selfish and why should others interfere to try to stop them, especially if their doing it cause they feel things would be better off without them.
Luckily I'm not suicidal anymore. I've come to realize the good things in life and my possible happy future. Suicide is NOT selfish...it's just incredibly stupid. Things get worse before they get better, and it sucks that people can't get through the worst parts first.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I am far from a selfish person. I want to die because I don't want to screw up anyone's life anymore! Is that selfish to you?
I sure think not!
And for all you people telling me that I and people like me want attention consider this- what will attention matter to me if I'm DEAD?
LOLOLOL! No suicide's not freakin' SELFISH!

Selfish and stupid. There are people who do depend on you. Just think how your parents would feel if you did something like that? They would be hysterical and probably do something crazy or even kill themself too, they wouldn't be the same ever again. Same goes with your friends, there are people out there who care. We do because we are trying to help you, if we didn't care we wouldn't have answered this question. Don't worry, be happy happy. Everything will get better!

I personally think suicide is the most selfish thing in the world. but that is easy for me to say because I am not suicidal. most people who want to kill themselves truley believe that if they werent around, everyone else would be happier. suicide is a disease, and it really is not the persons fault they feel these things, its all of our fault for not making them believe other wise.
people do not realise when the take there own life, the many other lives that are effected. every single person you have ever come in contact with is some how effected by this.

I dont think it's selfish. People who are suicidal are depressed. Depression is an illness (that has several successful treatments might I add) and not the person's fault. How can you blame a person with an illness for doing something the illness caused? I think people who are suicidal just dont see life the way other people do, the way it really is... And unless you've been there, there's no way to understand that.

Well my uncle killed himself nearly six years ago now and although it was pretty devastating, to say the least, I don't resent him for it. It was his choice and I would rather him be where he wants to be than here and miserable.

no, for some people its the only way out
however, too many people do it when there were better options
and have they had just seeked a bit of help, they could have turned there life around
and not have hurt all there freinds and family who now have to cope with the loss

It can be.
But, in a way suicide can be part of depression. It's very selfish at times especially when the lord isn't ready to take you yet. It can also be selfish when you're leaving loved ones behind and devastated. I wouldn't comitt suicide since I've had thoughts on doing that. It isn't worth doing.
Don't do it!! you're only going to ruin yourself and others in your life since I almost did that recently.

illness my a$$! I'm sorry, but seriously, what the f*ck? Deppression is only considered an illness because nowadays nearly EVERYTHING is treated with f*cking pills! ok? Suicide is usually a form of escape to some. To me its a form of fear. Some people do it because they feel like they don't belong in the world, or that nobody loves them etc.. To me its like nobody wants to continue living nowadays... Jesus Christ! people are so pessimistic... I think that obstacles are just a part of life, period. There is always going to be moment in life where you feel like you're nobody. But you are. Everyone does something meaningful in their lives, even if its simply existing to make another person happy. You're always special to someone else. I've heard some people killed themselves because of a relationship, even a break up with a boyfriend?gilfriend.. Honestly, is that a real reason to die? Life is something precious, you should be thankful you're even alive right now. Think about all those people in third world countries who are being killed against their will, or those who are on the brink of death but still live life to the fullest. Life is a priviledge, and must be taken seriously, and not make an idiotic move to take that priviledge away. Its better to have a little patience, for there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. And if you ever feel like the world is going to end, do something that makes you happy, think about that light...Don't die, please I hate suicide...it hurts a lot when someone you care about wants to die. I know I don't even know you, but if it means allowing someone else to continue living, I'll do my best. I had a best friend who tried to kill herself, and it felt like the everything was coming to an end. bottom line is...there's no excuse to taking your own life.

tallestemogrl: if you think it hurts YOU when someone you love wants to die, imagine how terrible it must feel to WANT to die.
Yeah, you don't like suicide because you hate how much it hurts you when someone does it. That's why you try to help them.
And depression is a disease. Not everyone takes pills to fix it. Some people go to therapy.
You obviously do not know what it is like to feel like everyone around you would be better off if you had never existed.
And yes, people have killed themselves over relationships, and yes, it probably isn't the best reason, but when you are upset and you have no one who cares enough to talk you through it, you can't think clearly. And instead of telling people how stupid you think suicide is when they ask about it, maybe you should try to help them. If you don't like it, try to prevent it.
And life is NOT precious if you hate it. If you have no one there for you, no one who can make you laugh or smile, then what is life? I'll tell you. It is a piece of sh*t. How do you think it feels to have so much crap in your life and no one to talk to it about? Hmm?
I had a best friend who tried to kill herself, and it felt like the everything was coming to an end.
Then shouldn't you understand it a little better? if she was your best friend, you'd think you would've talked to her about it, and at least tried to see it from another perspective. If it felt like everything was coming to an end for you, imagine what she must have felt like to want it to end.
And yes, obstacles are a part of life. But when you keep getting obstacles thrown at you with no reward, and no break, it gets a little tough to handle. usually people have ups and downs, but some people just get the downs. and for someone who hasn't experienced it, its hard to understand.

To answer the question, I do think suicide is a little selfish, because I know that I would be devastated if anyone I knew committed suicide. But I think I would be being equally selfish if all I could think about was how much it hurt me, because obvioiusly they were going through an awful lot of pain also.
