As with all things political...the word moderation does not exist. All or nuthin' is the name of the game. So now...in Seattle, you can't dress up as a witch for Halloween, or you might offend someone...in France it's not polite to say farm because there are pigs on farms, and there maybe a Muslum in the crowd...
It's verbal censorship...eventually we'll all get tongue-tied trying to stay correct...well not all, once it hit ridiculous, I said to he** with it...

There is a big difference between governmental censorship and socially acceptable speech. You are painting with a pretty broad stroke when you say political correctness. Calling someone the N-word is not censored by the government, but it certainly is frowned upon by society. Having to say sanitarian engineer instead of garabage man so as not to insult them is just stupid. There are degrees to everything.
