well, we don't celebrate them in the united states, that's all I know.
maybe because we don't celebrate pancake day in Dubai
technically it should be in any country that celebrates lent...but I guess not.
What is Pancake day? I just moved to Ireland and it's celebrated here. Is it a national holiday? Do you get to eat pancakes? Mmm... I love pancakes!
Yes it's just the UK, I was surprised that canadians dont know what it is either.
Typically, pancakes (the crepe kind, not the american caky type) are eaten at dinner time and served with lemon and sugar, or Golden Syrup, and rolled up. Mmmm. Hungry now. Not, its not a holiday, lol.
We do Pancake Tuesday (that's what we call it) here in New Zealand, at the Catholic Schools that is... it's a religious festival thing to do with Lent. Was one of my favourite times of the school year. You could buy pancakes at lunchtime (your choice of Golden Syrup, Maple Syrup or Raspberry Jam), and also there would be pancake races - a bit like a relay team where you would run and pass a pan with a pancake in it to someone else in your team, they would run with it and you couldn't spill or drop the pancake. First around the course with their pancake still in the pan won.
Yes, in France we discovered a different Pancake Day (which, being British, means that we now get to celebrate two a year!). The French one is 2nd February, so this year the two are really close.
They are for really different reasons: In Britian it's related to the Mardi Gras feast before Lent begins (in France everyone pigs out on sweets today and kids dress up, in Brazil tonight it's Carnival for the same reason).
The French pancakes are made for Candlemas (Feb 2nd) to commemorate some particularly down-to-earth Pope who saw the freezing pilgrims outside St Peters for the Candlemas Service and said something along the lines of: 'Stop the service - let's feed these people now!' So they had ingredients for pancakes and that's what they made for everyone. I like that story. A good one to celebrate.
Happy Pancake Day to all the Brits!
We have pancake day!!
(Canada)
And Happy Pancake Day to the Canadians and New Zealanders too, then...
I found this about pancake day...also known as shrove tuesday:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrove_Tuesday
it's the last day before lent.
lent as you may know is when people used to fast for 40 days.
so they used up the last of their ingredients before the fasting started.
hence using the ingredients to make pancakes.
to hell with pancake day, I hate it! it ruined my fasting. How are you by the way?
I went to IHOP here in america for National Pancake day/... they were giving out free pancakes. I dont know if that was the same thing or not.
We don't in the US, but that sounds like fun! I think I might convince my friends into doing it
I love pancake day! :P
Mmm very yummy
