I would assume it's bad, but for most battery chargers they simply stop charging once the battery is filled up.
some chargers do not shut off automatically. If that is the case it is not good for the batteries at all .It can cut their life short. It is normal for them to get warm. But not real hot.
Make sure that they were rechargeable batteries.
It's not a good idea to overcharge batteries. If you have one of those chargers that doesn't turn off automatically, then you really need to keep an eye on them and stop the charging at the appropriate time. Overcharging can not only ruin the batteries, but cause the batteries to either combust or leak, which can also ruin the charger, and can also start a fire. Batteries left in the charger has been known to start more than a few house fires over the years.
It wouldn't be a silly idea to get a new charger, one that can turn itself off, if you can.

Is it ok to overcharge batteries?
they were burning hot after I charged them 4 around 12hrs!
