Is depression hereditary?

because not everyone can blow spit bubbles with their tongues... Asked by genericusername 5 months ago, 5 answers.

If my dad and aunts (Dad's sisters) suffer from depression, and his dad (my grandpa) and his sisters (my great aunts) suffered from depression, and his dad (my great grandpa) suffered from depression, and it kind of runs in the family, is there a good chance that I'll end up with it, too? because that would sure explain a lot of things... It seems more like it goes through the guys in the family (I'm a girl), but some of my aunts have had it pretty bad... and what about my brother? Would he be more likely to get it since he's a guy? hmmm...

Hi,

There is evidence that some forms of depression have a genetic basis, in particular manic depression, or bipolar disorder. However, with those two exceptions most depression is learned, not genetic. Because depression has to do with styles of thinking, behavior and interpersonal relationships, depressive styles can be passed down in families. So if you had a parent or close family member who suffered from depression you will have learned the basic behavior models from them.

So, to answer the question, 'Is Depression Hereditary?' the answer is no. Someone may be predisposed towards depression if members of their family suffered with it, but this however does not guarantee they too will become depressed. Learned behavior does play a role, but learned behavior is a choice we as adults can alter.

Don't worry most of your genes come from your Grandparents rather than from your mom and dad. And your your own person.

Genetic - no. It's rather the fact that the children are brought up in that family atmosphere. Thera re healthy parents with depressed children and vice-versa.

Dear genericusername,
Yes, we are now discovering an gene that starves the brain of Seritonin...this gene is genetic. For many years we thought it was only environmental meaning that relatives are raised in a depressed surrounding and pick up the traits. But we now know that this isn't so. There is a gene link with family members.
Sue...good luck
