It depends - it can help you pay for things you _need_ to pay for when you're in a tight spot, but you need to be able to pay it off before the bank starts charging interest otherwise it becomes highly unhelpful and make your financial situation worse. Unless you think you might regularly be in a tight spot, and know that you can pay it off soon after every single time, I'd suggest you don't get one.

Helpful yes, but I don't think worth it in the long time.

I got my first credit card in college (non debit) to help pay for textbooks and unexpected things that came up.

Then I went into debt and couldn't afford to pay in back until now. I dropped out of school and work full time and was finally able to pay off my debt about a month ago. Hopefully I'll finish my degree next fall.

I don't know if my experience was typical, but I definitely don't plan on owning another credit card ever again.
