If addiction is the compulsion to use a drug, no matter what it is, does that mean it's OCD?

As a person gets hungrier, all of their focus is on getting food. That drive becomes overwhelming. It is a survival instinct. They will die without the food.
An addicts brain has addapted to the drug to the point of treating access to that drug as if it were a basic drive, like hunger.
They are not going to die (usually) but their brain is sending out the same types of urgent signals as are sent when they are starving. It 'thinks' that it is a survival situation.
Unfortunately, this brain change that comes about that gives the addict his / her addiction is a lifelong change. The addiction can be triggered back to activity even after many years of sobriety --- DJ AM most rescently died after 11 years of sobriety after he needed pain medication as a result of surviving a near fatal plane crash last year.

When you think about it, it could be considered sort of a pseudo-OCD. An addicted person is obsessed with getting/using the drug of choice...they are compelled to do so (no amount of will-power can stop them)...However, it's a self induced form of OCD...and anti-depressents, or other usual forms of treatment used for OCD won't help them...

This is a very interesting question. Although the person is obsessed and has compulsions surrounding the drug, the difference between OCD and an addiction is the OCD has to do with performing certain behaviors, while drug addiction has to do with the actual substance. Yes the behaviors can be ritualistic, but at the end of the day it isnt about the behavior but about the substance itself.
