Do internet businesses have to be registered with the government?

I want to run an e-commerce bussiness on the internet.But I want to know one thing,do I have to register the bussines with the government like any other bussiness.If you have any contacts for bussiness advisors you may write them down as well -that will be much apreciated.

Actually in the U.S. you do because it in income and you have to report it and Charge Taxes for sells in your own state. . plus in the U.S. you need a Tax Number ( Not an SSN ) if You wish to purchase products from a wholesaler and you have to register for that.
In the U.K. I believe you get set up thru these people "Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform" http://www.dti.gov.uk/index.html
So Yes you have to Register an online Business.
