The only information I know, is that Martin Luther was a good and honest priest, and he could not tolerate the atrocities that were going on in the church. So one fine day in the middle of the night he stuck posters on all churches , mentioning 10 points he did not agree, with regards to the church. One of the points was that all priests were given a huge map, which showed GOD in the center, & around the center there were thousands of circular seats. If you want to book your seat in heaven close to God, you have to pay more. This is what the clergy were made to do, to collect donations to build the present day basilica in Rome.
The moment the church came to know about this he was a wanted man, & to save himself he hid in a mountain cave in Germany, where he spent his time translating the Bible from Latin to German language.

Yup, this whole era that darryl is referring to is now called the Reformation.

Luther had challenged the Pope and the church on clerical abuses on the posters darryl mentioned, the title of this document was the 95 Theses.

It's important to remember that Martin Luther did not intend to break away from the Catholic Church. German princes tired of being under Rome's thumb used his religious views to do that. Luther himself simply wanted to rid the church of corruption and what he viewed as sinful, un-Biblical practices. What's ironic is that some of the things Luther opposed were actually changed during the Catholic Counter-Reformation.
