what kinda dog is it?
I've had a german shepherd for 5 years and he never was greasy...

might be something with the hairs on her neck that might be causing the problems though...but its a guess

Ummm... don't dogs have 'musk glands' on their face and neck? Isn't it another way they mark their territory?

dogs pant when they get hot...how long has this been going on with the oil ? Are you very sure your dog hasn't been rolling in something...? That sounds strange to me...oil around the neck...never heard of that...What kind of dog do you have ? dichihuahua

Hi,

I'm with dichihuahua on this one...are you sure he wasn't rolling around in something greasy?

It's definitely not sweat, dogs sweat through panting and their paw pads.

Do you put flea treatment on him regularly? My dogs sometimes look greasy around the head/neck area after I apply their Frontline, but that's the only time I've seen it.

My next ideas:
- Food or skin allergy
- Mites
- Cocci or yeast infection of the skin

I would take the dog to the vet or something. No harm in getting it checked out. Yeah, he might have rolled in somethign though. The hairs might me contracting too much oils or something... I don't know. But hey... your dog might be the first one to actualyl sweat lol

My guess would be that it's a skin condition...or he's been rolling in something...If it's under his collar, maybe take the collar off for a week and see if it clears up. There might be something in it that he's having a reaction to.

You might try some medicated shampoo (Viodene, for instance...you can get it at a Farm Store)...

Otherwise, have a vet look at it, it sounds familiar...somewhere in my old brain I've ran across this before...

For a fact, tho...it's NOT sweat.

she probably has mange and should be taken to the vet immediately. the same thing happened to my dog and then all her hair fell out and her skin started rotting. she died about a week ago and we just had her funeral. I dont think I'll ever be able to get over it and I dont want anyone to suffer the horrible pain that I had to when I watched my once healthy dog slowly deteriorate into nothing...
