Ideas for a novel?

One of my favorite things to do is read and I also love to write.
I've been thinking about writing a novel and I came up with some ideas but I want more.
Does anybody have any ideas for a novel?

Pick things out of your own life and alter them. Do what if questions about your life (like what if my mum divorced my dad and joined a cult?) and then once you have a grip of the storyline, take yourself out of the equation and put your protagonist there instead and imagine how they would react to the sequence of events.

This may not help you much, but I just finished reading Revolutionary Road based on the novel by Richard Yates happy . I found it really good and entertaining. It has a lot going on, but if you're into that kind of stuff, it's a good book to pick up happy .
I found it at Chapters for about $20.
