LOL! I'm willing to give away my age and be labeled an old fart , but yes, I was around in the 60's and I loved it! I remember going to my first Beatle's concert at Olympia Stadium in Detroit and working hard to get the money to pay for the ticket. The cost? Ten dollars! Hey, back then, that was a good chunk of change for a kid! I babysat, washed cars, saved my allowance, etc.
There used to be 'gas wars' between local gas stations - I can remember when 'Shannon's' gas station sold their gas for 20.9 cents per gallon...next door, 'Gold's' beat them by a penny...gas was 19.9 cents per gallon. We could fill our tanks for less than five bucks.
The only McDonald's restaurant was 18 miles away - we used to ride our bikes there to get the 15 cent hamburgers...LOL!
Ah, the music...it was great! Sounds even better these days, digitally remastered!
It wasn't all fun and games. I remember exactly where I was when President Kennedy was assassinated. I was in my English class and I remember everyone was crying. We were all sent home from school and we didn't return to classes for almost two weeks. We also dealt with Vietnam. Several of my classmates died over there. :-(
I remember the shocking scandal when one of the high school cheerleaders got pregnant...wow, that was the talk of the town for months. I still see that gal to this day...she has grandchildren in college now.
Fashionwise, I wore mini-skirts and 'go-go' boots. We all loved to watch 'Shindig' and 'Hullaballoo' on television, and of course, 'American Bandstand.' ('I rate that song a 10...it has a good beat and you can dance to it.' LOL!)
Yep, there were the hippies, but the 'real' hippies were out in San Francisco. Most of us were fake hippies, but I'm sure our parents figured we were destined for hell when we'd flash the 'Peace' sign.
We ironed our hair, (yep, with a real clothes iron) to make it straight. We 'ratted' our hair to make it poufy. A boy's hair was considered 'long' if it touched the back of his collar.
And we indulged in, *gasp* dirty dancing...LOL! I remember being thrown out of a school dance for being too suggestive. These days, my moves would probably be considered 'puritan,' but back then, it was scandalous. Hehe!
45 RPM records were 78 cents at K-Mart - record albums came to a grand total of $3.10.
Do I miss the 60's? Sure, but I also love the present. Wouldn't mind paying 19.9 cents per gallon for gas though!
Nothing is as how you imagine it. I doubt that those decades were as innocent as you think.
I miss the early 90s, but I never want to experience living without a daily access to the Internet again. I could live with the gas price of the time and all those cool Griffone T-shirts, but that's about it.
I don't think the 60''s and 70's were all innocent... the 60's was hippy time, free love and lsd, the 70's was glam rock, groupies and drugs... every era is different, has its good and bad times... youngsters today look at the 60's and 70's and laugh.. I look at todays youth and it scares me... there's no need to cry at the songs you hear, just enjoy them.
Dear modernwinterbreeze,
I was born in 58 so I experienced the 60s and 70s. Things were different then but not as much as you think. We tend to think the kids today are more defiant, pernicious etc. But this isn't so. Sure the times were different but we were just getting a voice as kids back then...we finally were allowed to say 'no'. This was such an important time for women in general as well...you see women were also given the power to say no. The mind set back then was women and children should be seen and not heard. With this new power we (women and children) took it to the umph degree of course LOL. Drugs were just being introduced...and with the new freedoms we were going to show them ( the system) Who ever they were! So it was a learning era for all of us. Many died, many became addicted, many lost their families because their parents didn't understand them...SOUND FAMILIAR? So as different as it was it was very much the same. We just wanted to be heard, noticed and we wanted to stand up for our rights. Bad things happened a lot during that era but no one spoke of them, they were afraid to. Today we make people accountable for their actions so in some aspects it's a much better society than it was back then. But I suppose you might of had to live through it to really believe that. We saw some pretty bad stuff that never got reported and saw some really bad people not being accountable for what they did. Be very grateful for living now and being able to grow up in a time when there is so much help, education and accountability. Right now is a great time to be young.
Sue...good luck
From my point of view it was the best time to be young. As in any time period there were 'issues', and bad times ... but the good times far outweighed them if you had your head on straight. Albums (yeah that large black vinyl disc) were about 3 bucks and it seemed like a new one that you loved was coming out every other day ... hard rock was in it's infancy. Kids had long hair, smoked pot, wore ragged jeans and bell bottoms, every record store sold 'head' gear (bongs, roach clips, papers) ... no big deal. We protested social injustice, rallied against war, took up environmental causes, and I honestly thought we were going to change the world ... and we did, but only somewhat. I think we let the next generation down, and I even told someone in their 20's that recently. No one is perfect, we had successes and failures, but I will vouch for being a teenager in the 60's and 70's ... it was Groovy and I wouldn't trade places with another other generation. I live in a college town now and when I wander into a bar packed with 20-somethings I invariably hear music from MY youth being played on the stereo system. I finally asked a bartender why that was. His response was simply ... 'it was good music'. I smiled.

I haven't lived in the 60's or 70's, but I will be alive in the 60's and 70's. You know that the 60's will come back in less than 52 years. I wouldn't want to live in the ancient times of the 1960's and 1970's. I don't even like living in 2008. If I had a choice I would live in the 5200's because that is when Mankind will finally become a Kardashev 2 Civilization, and the fun will really begin!! The future is where it's at. Just look at the new things that are happening even today. Don't get struck in the past. In 1963 The KTVL Mast in North Dakota became the tallest manmade structure in the world at a height of 628 meters, but in this year the Burj Dubai will become the tallest manmade structure of any sort to have been constructed on this blue planet at a height of 818 meters!! New things are coming like flying cars, a permanent base on the moon, space elevators, launch loops, space travel, etc...Enjoy the future!
yes I wish I was born in the baby boomers. be with other hippies. being a modern day hippie is hard alone. I was born in the wrong decade!

Was anyone around in the '60s and '70s or wishes they were?
Alright - I'm obsessed with the 60s and 70s era.The music,movies - you name it!
Call me crazy, but I feel sad about the fact that I wasn't around any of those eras.I hear that both decades were very innocent, but then again, not too conservative. Then again,I hear that it's NOTHING like how it is now.
I swear, and not to sound all weird and all,but I seem to cry everytime I hear a song from the 60s or 70s.Yes,I guess you could say that I have some issues in that department.Laughs!
Alright - I have no idea how anyone could respond to this story, but could anyone relate?I'm not saying that many people cry over the fact, but anyone miss the 60s or 70s era?Anyone from the eras?Experienced them? What did I miss out on?
