why do we blush?

I personally hate blushing. so what MAKES us blush? like our system of course.
why does it happen when your either embarassed, ashamed,
shy, nervous, etc?
how can you stop it? is it possible?

why does it have to happen?

yeah... thatshygirl pretty much answered it just right. basically, when your heart beats faster, more blood is rushing, and if its because of an awkward position(or something of that nature) the blood will rush to your face and the reason why its more noticeable on your face(that I think) is because the skin on your face is thinner than the skin over your body, so the blood is more easily seen. and thus, Blushing...

When you're caught ashamed or in an awkward position, your body releases a bit of adrenaline. Your heart rate goes up. You breathe faster. And often, blood vessels that deliver blood to your face dilate--they open up or relax a little. More blood than usual flows to the skin of your face, and your face darkens or turns noticeably red.
