Why does my vagina smell bad after sex?

Me Asked by sammy_sue_2005 over 2 years ago, 33 answers.

I'm 20 years old and I just had sex for the first time and me and my boyfriend have both noticed that afterwards my vagina has a bad smell. Is there anything I can do to prevent it?

Yep, it's the semen. Next morning after some of it leaks out onto my undies (I sit on the toilet for a bit the night of to let gravity help) my undies have a dead animal smell; ONLY time I ever notice this smell. Just bathe and let nature take it's course; I think all the talk about vaginosis is over-kill but if you use good hygiene and still notice it all the time then maybe...the vagina is internally self cleaning and NO smells should be present until bacteria has had time to interact with bodily fluids on the OUTSIDE of you.

Semen is an extremely alkaline fluid which can drastically change the pH level of your vagina. This might be why you're experiencing a change in smell after sex. Maybe try using a condom? Or using cleansing wipes right after intercourse. I don't think you should douche because that can wash out the good natural bacteria in you and wash in bad, infection causing bacteria.

definitly go to doctors to be on the safe side, what it sounds like to me is bacterial vaginosis basically what happens is inside your virgina it has it's own eco system of regular growth of bateria that just starts to get more then needed , any foriegn object such as penis, fingers and or semen if inserted might upset the balance of the regular bacteria in your virgina which would cause an over growth of bacteria that you are suppose to have in your virgina. Why yogart (eaten) is suggested is to regulate the bacteria in virgina ,so try that and if you still can smell that odor then you will probably have to go get medication to help get rid of it. happy but I do suggest if you do get treatment after the odor isw gone make it a regular thing to put yogart in your diet and eat it once twice a week,I also suggest a womens soap made for us because perfumed soap will upset the balance down there it is called vagisil which is made for washing your genital area and my last suggestion is to wear cotton panties as much as possible because it helps to maintain regular growth there ,dont stress I no myself I was embarrassed when it ws happening to me ,but try doing the few things I suggested because I had that problem and I now do all those things and I havent had a problem not even a yeast infection in a long time so now I feel comfortable with myself in that region good luck hun and dont stress the doctor will help you and will prob suggest sum of the things I had

For real if sperm is left inside the vagina for at least 4 hours or more it might smell with a mild odor that comes from the dead sperm killed by your vagina fluids acids. So I suggest to wash -but not right after.Take your time. But put in mind of what happens when you spin your tires for a while.I am not a Doc.If you think it is worth it to check with your doctor,do so.

I've had similar situation. Doctors or the clinics Cannot diagnose it but I think I know what it is. You might not believe this but if your boyfriend smokes even right before you do it, it's going to affect you. If he doesn't smoke sorry for misdiagnosis, it's just that me my friend had similar problem and our exes smoke. It results as a BV although they can't tell you how you got it. I take very good care of myself And I have had sex with a non smoker I cam tell th difference. If your still with him try and use protection both for oral and everything else. Another thing is since men cannot be diagnosed with BV, the bacteria is in their sperm and they are the carrier. Sorry guys but you need to visit your doc or a clinic for the sake of your woman... Thanks

Well here it is, the chemical mix of a man and a women will lead to a fishy smell a day or more after intercourse, when you become a grown women then you learn these things. Sperm actually doesn't smell and neither does a womens fluid, but the combination of the two can make a funk. Showering and using the restroom right after will lessen the effect. Don't sleep on it, you'll regret it. No douche either although affective not healthy for your body. Good luck.

please don't put yogurt on it, whoever wrote that is an idiot!

---

No, they're actually not an idiot.. Lactobacillus is the good bacteria that live in the vagina - and it's also in yogurt.. Sometimes tho, the good bacteria can get overrun with bad smelly bacteria, which is vaginosis.. As someone pointed out, eating yogurt is very beneficial to maintaining the vaginal flora as it's called..

If someone can't afford to see a Dr, putting yogurt down there is definitely way better than doing nothing - it should just be the totally unflavored kind tho.

whats a douch?? can someone tellme please??

Ok this is the real answer. The semen mixed with your secretions makes a fishy like smell. Douching is not the best thing for it. I take a bath in a tub and use my fingers to rinse out the semen. If I go to sleep without washing I WILL smell the next day so I just use my fingers in the bath tub. Douching is only good about once a month the day after the last day of your period.

I had seen my Dr. about this numerous times about 3 years ago. I used the gel as precribed and used pills that another Dr. prescribed (DO NOT DRINK WHILE TAKING THESE!! - THEY AREN'T KIDDING WHEN THEY TELL YOU THIS).

This sounds silly, but Hydrogen Peroxide works. My Dr. actually suggested this so that I would not have to keep coming back. When you feel an infection coming on you can soak a tampon in it and then put the tampon in for 3 minutes or so. Do this a couple of times a day and it should prevent/stop the full infection.

I also have started taking a once daily woman's vitamin with folic acid in it and eating yogurt as often as possible. The Activia works best.

I did once have to douce with a mix of hydrogen peroxide and water (using a turkey baster - don't laugh -it worked).

I would see your doctor first before anything because it could be an STD. If they test you and it does happen to be BV it will most likely come back. Then, once diagnosed, you can try the other options - after asking advice from your Dr. of course.
