Yes. It is. Not sleeping can cause serious physical and mental issues. Including psychosis (I.e. you can lose touch of reality and basically go crazy). Somehow I dont think it is as simple as telling you that sleep is not a waste of time because if you dont get it, you will shorten your life considerably. I think you need to explore the reasons behind your reluctance to sleep. I honestly think you need to talk to a therapist...
I'm the same way, when I dont get much sleep at night I make sure I stay awake all day then go to bed around 10 or 11. I pretty much pass out that way. I get really sick if I dont get much sleep and my fiancee thinks I look like a zombie. Here are some other tips:
1. dont eat for at least 3 hours before you go to bed
2. no reading or watching tv for at least an hour
3. make sure your not to hot or you wont be able to sleep
4. make sure the room is very very dark, even a little light can keep you awake
I follow these almost once a fortnight (when I break my sleep cycle again by having a nap during the day) So try not to nap during the day. I also tried a herbal pill that I put under my tongue half an hour before I went to bed and I had the best nights sleep of my life. It's not really medication, I consider it an extra little push to help me sleep.
