Actually, I completely have this problem too, but not as severe. the things I gag on are bananas, oatmeal, cooked spinach, other cooked, slimy things, and..well...the unmentionable thing! I think I have too much phlem or saliva, or something, plus I have sinus problems. So yeah I guess just take it slowly, and inhale deeply.
