Calm down... I have heard people call themselves colored... Some people find it offensive and some dont... Whoever said it probably wasnt trying to be racist... Obviously it isnt the most PC term out there, however the intent behind a word is always what is important... words by themselves are simply symbols, they dont mean anything until you attach a meaning to them...
Why should I have to calm down?
Who have you heard call themselves colored?
I've never heard that.
Everyone should find it offensive. Whether it's said to them, or not.
They might not have 'tried' to sound racist, but they don't have to try.
And obviously it means something to me. I think it's stupid for anyone to
say the word, and I don't know why anyone would.
In this day and age it's difficult not to say something that's offensive to at least a couple people in the world.
A very good friend of mine came from Jamaica, and his skin was naturally very dark. He referred to himself as coloured all the time, and he rather enjoyed labeling the rest of us as pasties.
I have heard plenty of African Americans call themselves colored.
I remember this particular case of an african american woman because this woman found it offensive that an asian in her office called herself colored. She thought using the word colored was a way of referring to her past history of oppression, and that someone who didnt share in that history had no right using the term.
So yes, some african americans use the term.
Some hispanics/latinos use the term.
And now apparently some asians use the term.
Just because you find the term universally offensive does not mean everyone has to share your views. Why should everyone be offended by a term you choose to find offensive?
I find your narrow mindedness highly offensive...
I have a national diploma in health social care and officially it is racism if you call some body 'coloured'
Alone we cannot educate people, we cannot tell people that 'coloured' is racist!
There's a thing called Karma which I strongely agree on. People cant change people! Let them get on with there small minded personalities... I can tell you know they wont get far!!
Dont let Racists bother you!
*The times they are a changing**
If you talk to a black person born in the 20's or the 30's, they certainly refered to themselves as colored or people of color...that was considered a polite reference (racist sounding now, however) in that era...In my era...the sixties... African Americans refered to themselves as Black...and that became the non-racist term...ie Black Panthers, Black Power ect...Today it's African Americans...a mouthful, to say the least...but what the hell...if an ethnic group wants to name themselves, ok with me...
Racism...is hating another group of people based on color and origin...with a arrogant belief that (your color is the good color...People are people are people...blindfolded we'd be hard pressed to make stupid generalizations...
So get off the words...colored fits everybody...if ya didn't have a color, you'd be frigging tranparent...
p
I agree with Ty, What's wrong with being colored? If I were white, I'd be white. If I were black, it'd be black. It's not like I'm insulting someone. What's wrong with being a color? Like teendollie12 said, her sibling thinks of colors involving crayons. Colors aren't offensive.
Colors are innocent. What's wrong with being a certain color? Not like I'm making fun of someone by saying that. It depends on who it is. Everyone has their own way of thinking.
You say you're entitled to your own opinion and yet you're telling us to think in this certain way, without giving us our own opinion. You attack in remarks saying that your way of seeing it is right. Maybe you see it as one way, and some people don't.
Being a color doesn't bother me, if it bothers someone else then that's them.
I've gave you my answer so good day. And whoever rates me wrong for this... I don't really care because it's freedom of speech in the world. But obviously that doesn't apply right now.
This term came from the West. You see,in the West, the majority are pale skinned. Thus the term,'white'.So,lol, when we folks, the Asians and all, come in,we're blacks, reds, browns, blah blah, thus under the category 'colored'.In some ways, yea, its rascist and some think it unfair and some think it,well,u know,ok.
