Hypocrite christians - who are they?

Asked by cookielover 9 months ago, 18 answers.

Lately, I’ve been searching the internet to find out more on Christianity but, I find more sites with people complaining about Hypocrite Christians and how they have caused good people to leave the church and sometimes even the Christian faith.

Therefore...

my question is:

What are some of the main reasons and /or examples that cause many people to leave Christianity or the Christian church?

Mainly, I’m interested in real offensive stories and /or examples that you, or someone you know may have experienced with another Christian or Christians that may have caused you to give up or, ALMOST give up on Christianity entirely.

I am asking because as a new christian.

***the internet is the absolute WORST place to use when you're researching religion!***

...worst place? Oh, DO explain why a place with information about ALL religions, and ALL opinions related to those religions, would be BAD for someone who wants to do RESEARCH?

Instead, they should to go a place, where they'll only get ONE SIDE of the story, and a fraction of the information?

I have a friend who was Pentecostal. At his church, members would often (finger quotes) ''channel the holy spirit'' and start speaking in tongues. There was one older gentleman there, who would frequently channel the spirit of John The Baptist. Everyone fully believed (including the pastor and elders) that this was TRULY John The Baptist, speaking through this man.

Then... one Sunday, my friend suddenly wondered... ''If this guy is REALLY channeling John The Baptist; then WHY is John The Baptist speaking in the Queen's English?''

Certainly not all Christians are hypocrites and certainly are not the only people or group to have hypocrites in their number - as to who they are, they're people just like you or I, with strengths and weaknesses, most trying to well represent - it would be educational to not limit the question to only one religious faith but rather focus on examples experienced in all.

A woman bought the apartment building I lived in. I was living there month-to-month since I never signed a lease. She raised our rent a huge amount so I found another place but it wasn't ready in time for me to move out before the 1st of the next month so I stayed there a few days. She asked me to pay rent for the extra days I stayed. I told her that she could take it out of my deposit. She said that I paid my deposit to the previous landlord not her so I had to pay her for the extra days I stayed there. We obviously had a disagreement of opinion.

She told he that she was a devout Christian woman and that I should pay her the money instead of stiffing her over it because she didn't deserve this kind of treatment.

I told her that I thought that I should have credit for the deposit I paid to the apartment complex regardless of who now owns it.

Then she threatened to take me to court and lie saying that I was a terrible tenet and that I intentionally ran up the electric bill (it was all bills paid) and that I trashed the place.

She had no problem claiming to be a devout Christain in one breath and threatening to bare false witness against me in the next.

One of my son's teachers phoned and started the conversation by saying that she was a good Christian woman. Then she went on to ask me if I was aware that my son had black friends, except that she used the n word for black.

There are christian hypocrites on this site. They state that they love all people - love the sinner, not the sin - then they make statements such as homosexuals deserve to get AIDS because of their sin of homosexuality

As a young jewish girl, I was corned by a group of much older christians who told me I was going to hell and that my relatives were in hell because we weren't christian.

Fundamentalism could be the downfall of hypocrites. But we are all hypocrites, like it or not.

Look at the example in Scripture when Jesus talked to the Scribes and Pharisees. He would often say, Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees, Hypocrites!... He said that because those particular people in His day were doing all the right things in the religious circles, BUT their hearts were far from pure in motives. They were self seeking egotists who took advantage and manipulated the law to suit themselves instead of having a tender heart towards those in their midst.
In short anyone who claims one thing and does the opposite is a hypocrite. Not just in religious circles but in all walks of life.

I am a Christian once again...but I decided before (and am contemplating it now) to just declare myself agnostic.

There are many reasons for this but the main reason being that Christians always seem to be preaching to me to accept everyone and love everyone etc etc but when it comes to actually doing it themselves you find some of the largest hypocrites there are. The so-called Christian friends I have back stab each other more that any other people I know.

Also one of the biggest problem I have is that churches are always against gays...I mean gays will go to hell, it is a sin against gays etc etc, but they never preach to the divorcee's and even murderers who has been reborn.. and I find that extremely unacceptable

There are just to many small things bothering me about my religion...

Well... technically... you don't HAVE to go to church... to be Christian. So, you don't HAVE to socialize with THOSE people you mentioned.

the internet is the absolute WORST place to use when you're researching religion! try christianity for dummies, or just go to a church and ask a pastor. they'll be happy to help, trust me.

That is because people take their eyes off Jesus and put them on people. People are human and will mess up. Royally. That is no excuse to dismiss Jesus. Only he was perfect; we are not. We will never walk on water. This is why so many people say christians are hypocrites. They can be; they are not God. Though many christians really do their best to live as Jesus teaches. But there are bad apples everywhere and a lot of them are christians, unfortunately. It's best to look at what Jesus did, said, and how he lived, rather than looking at christians' behavior as your guide to christianity. Basically for lots of people it is an excuse not to believe and it doesn't wash with God. It sounds cool to go around saying christians are hypocrites and I'll never be one, just look at so and so's behavior. But it will only defeat you in the end. You must look at Jesus and make your decision based on The Perfect One.
