If you're trying to display the actual codes, like on a How To type of site, you can try putting * or spaces in between parts of the code to stop it from activating.

In my post, when trying the HTML examples, please replace & with a normal ampersand (shift+7). I cannot get the normal ampersand to display.

You may be looking for < and >? < will display a less than sign, while > will display a greater than sign.
If you need to display a & itself, use &
To give examples, <br> will show as br
< will display as <

Perhaps something such as <img src=image.jpg>

Note there should be no space between the & and gt;. Where it is >, it should actually be like !gt;, @gt;, etc., but with an ampersand.
