The media ALWAYS makes things ten times worse than they really are and then ignore other, more important things going on in the world. I'm only 14, but when this is supposed to get really bad is when I'm going to start having my own car and paying my own bills... I'll probably just have to cut down on my expenses, stock up on ramen noodles, and do whatever I can to drive less and pay my bills. Hopefully, our economy will shape up by then and we'll have some real politicians in office... rather than the idiots running our country today.
From what I read, they'll be much larger problems for mankind in the future - personally, I'd be a nervous wreck if I didn't have my faith to lean on.
If you're worried about peak oil, then buy oil stocks. They'll skyrocket when it hits (perhaps it's hitting right now), and you can cash in. There will always be plenty of goods for those with the money to buy them.
When peak oil hits for real, it's going to cause major upheavals in the excesses. Hour long commutes to work will be a thing of the past. We'll become much more dependent on public transportation and will have to drastically cut frivolous consumption. But it won't be the end of modern civilization, it'll just be the end of wide spread decadent living. I think 10 years after it hits people will laugh at the ridiculous excesses of today. 'Oh my god I can't believe I used to drive that! How stupid was that!?'
There really is no additional happiness gained by driving a Hummer vs a Smart car, and if food prices stay high, people will eat less, perhaps helping to solve the rampant obesity problem.
...but I'm not giving up air conditioning!
As I said elsewhere, I expect that most Americans will have to adjust to a lower standard of living. Elsewhere things will be much worse.

How will you survive peak oil and economic depression?

so experts aren't sure when peak oil production will happen, some think it already has some think it will in the next few years. but demand will grow, oil won't be able to keep pace, and that will mean bad things for the world economy.
add to that our skyrocketing debt, growing unskilled labor force, and shortage of crucial resources, which is probably going to lead to another depression if not now then in the future, and it doesn't look like a particularly bright future.
so how do you plan to survive all this? buy some land and head for the hills? save your money, tighten the belt and try to weather the storm? or is all of this alarmism a little exaggerated, and things aren't and won't get quite that bad.
