There are many ways to tye dye things depending on the type of pattern you want to end up with, but if you've tye dyed t shirts before, I'm sure you know that. happy Since you are going to be dying such a large item, this would probably be the best method:

Spread the duvet cover out on a clean surface that you don't mind getting dye on or has been covered in plastic.
Start on one of the long sides (like the right or left of the cover, not the top or bottom) and roll the whole cover up into a tight snake or tube shape.
Wrap rubber bands tightly around the tube at three or four inch intervals all the way down it.
Then, the easiest thing is to have the dye colors that you want mixed up and put in squirt bottles, like old rinsed out ketchup bottles, instead of trying to dip something that big in a bucket.
After dying it, let it stand over night. Then rinse it and let it air dry before washing it.

That's an awesome idea for a present! He'll love it. Good luck!! happy

Oh yeah, this is sorta the pattern you'll get except for since you're rolling it long end to long end, it'll be a vertical striping pattern instead of horizontal.

Especially 'jlw82' ...where did you learn to do that?!

I want to do a spiral sort of tye-dye on the duvet like on t-shirts though.
