assumption: you are removing single pane, single hung, aluminum windows.
1. tools needed
heat gun, sawsaw, drill/screw gun, crow bar, caulk gun, hammer, cold chisel, a good helper
2. remove the plastic striping around the individual panes of glass.
3. with a helper... start heating (on high) the glass, now your helper should be on the inside with a shim or two. helper starts working the shim inbetween the glass and the aluminum frame. common sense will take over from here and you will be able to remove all the glass panes w/o breaking them.
4. cut the center divider of the window with a saw saw, remove-
5. using a wood block 1x4, put block on bottom brick ledge. work crowbar under bottom center of window frame and pry up (1x4 keeps you from damaging brick) cut exposed frame in center with saw saw.
6.same method as above, start prying lower left and right sides of frame out (dont worry the nails holing the window in will pop no problem) once the sides are loose you should be able to break -seperate- the pieces top will pull - pry- out the same.
7. once window is fully removed... cold chisel and hammer will remove any excess mortar that will interfere with install of new vinyl window.
note. measure replacement window 1/4 inch smaller than opening (measure between brick, outside not inside.)
slide in new window, but to existing window return and screw through factory holes on inside of frame (4 screws, 2 per side)
I use silicone on the outside of window and a matching color paintable caulk on the inside of the house
although it may sound complicated this is really a simple process a helper and myself can do 1 an hour start to finish.
