Well my next-door-neighbor was in dance and what she did was lay up against the wall backwards so that her butt was up in the air. Then she would just open her legs and sit like that for hours while we talked. She couldn't do the splits right away but by the time we were done talking she was in the splits from the pressure of gravity and the weight of her legs. Most importantly it didn't hurt her and she was pushing herself too hard. It sound funny but it actually works, she is on the senior line of her dance group and I think she is captain this year.
if you cant do them now its likley that you wont be able to do them
its not something that just anyone can learn, even if they are flexible
but stretching your legs is vital
and try to get a bit further down each time you try
its not going to hppen fast though
it could take weeks to months before you see better improvments
