heart muscle cells can begin to die as quickly as 30 minutes after circulation has been halted and the tissues have become ischemic, after 2 hours nearly half of the cells in the affected area will die, after 4 to 6 hours 90% of the cells in the affected area of the heart will be dead.

these dead necrotic cells will eventually become scar tissue which will create a burden for the heart and make it more difficult to circulate blood.
