How do you make an outline?

I'm writing a paper on insomnia. But before I write the paper, I have to put it into an outline. I know how to do an outline, I just don't remember about the letters, or the numbers and whatnot. Here's what I've got.

I. What is insomia?
A. A short...

term sleep problem.
1. It's often linked to short term stress.
2. It can last for days to weeks.
B. A chronic sleep problem.
1. This is ongoing, due to depression or chronic pain.

Does that look right? Do I have the the letters/numbers in the right spot?

Well you could always do a T-Chart. Put the main topic or sentence on the left (lettered) and then put the subtopics numbered on the right side.
