cutie,
You will have to use foils if you want a better effect the the good ol' cap.
It would take me way to long to explain how to do it, I took quite a few hair styling classes, and do my own. If you search youtube though they have tons of great videos on how to apply highlights and such. So be sure to check it out. Good luck.

And when you use foils, you can use the stuff right out of your kitchen. Just tear them into big rectangles that are about 5 inches wide and as long as you need. (We used reynolds wrap at a Regis Hair saloon in the mall) Just section your hair up and weave through a section of hair that you want to highlight- like Steph said, it's hard to explain so try finding it on youtube- just wanted you to know you can use foil from your kitchen
Unless you know what your doing, highlights with or without foils, is not a good thing to do yourself at home. the least inexpensive way to get them done professionally is to call and get a consultation with a stylist, a good one should give you this for free(about 15 minutes), and discuss free handing or foiling some along your part line or around your face. This is definately your best option. Trust me, I've had people spend a lot more money and time to get their mistakes fixed than just getting it done professionally from the start!!
I would just use foils! you can get them at sallies and there onlie like 9.99 and buy you hair die and
1. Take aThe Section you Want With A Rat Tailed Comb
2. fold the top of the foil and use a dye brush (sallies about $1) and Brush The Color on
3. Fold The Foil Up
4. Repeat this to every section you want foiled
5.leave in as long as the box says
6.wash and condition and there you go!
