How do you get over someone?

I am almost a 100% sure someone has asked this question, but how do you get over someone?
I've been in love with my bestfriend for the last four years, problem is well he is gay (and im a girl), and honestly even if he was straight I would not be his...

type... point is, how do you stop obesessing over someone!

yea I know exactly how you feel right now except he's not gaay..
well yea he has a girlfriend.. he's had girlfriends since weve been friends..

yea she threatened to kill me if I talked to him again...
but yea it is really hard..im working on it right now..I don't know im getting rid of EVERYTHING from him.notes,pictures,anything that he's touched really...

Lol, yeah... its not like its ever going to happen... its torture being around him sometimes...

She thinks I should date someone else, and that would help... I have dated though, it hasnt helped in the past, I just end up feeling bad because id rather be spending time with my friend... and they tend to pick up on how important he is, and I dont think that helps...

Gosh. That's a tricky spot, isnt it? Do you think it's interfering with your everyday life? I suppose... if it's unresolved it's stopping you from meeting others that you could fall in love with, then maybe it is interfering... What about therapy? Hard to find a good therapist - always better if it can be recommended by someone else. I don't think there's a quick fix for this one. If you;d say, oh, 3 months... I'd say it was a passing thing. But 4 years is a long time to be a slave to an unrealistic expectation. Is he the type you can talk it over with? Do you think it would make a difference if he knew? How would he react? Guilt? confusion?

What does your therapist think you should do?

just get over him
but just ask him if he likes you first
but you never know he might like you back

There is only one good way in my view, but it's not very nice. Stop all contact for 6 months at least.

lol, see problem is BEST FRIEND... its hard to cut off contact from the one person you can not live without...

My life used to revolve around him, and he knew it, so things got a little crazy between us, but its stopped interferring with every single moment of my life (yes that is how bad it was). I dont really feel the need to date because when things are good, he does fill that emotional need (the ironic part is my therapist pointed it out). Yeah, apparently therapists dont really help you get over people...
He knows, you'd have to be deaf dumb blind and really really stupid not to figure it out within a couple of hours of meeting me (this would be proven by the fact that everyone I have ever met has figured it out within this time period), but ofcourse he lives in denial.
He has this issue with friends liking each other (he has this slight problem where his keep falling for him) and he definitely wouldnt be happy if I told him. To him it would literally be like his sister confessing love...
