well there really isn't a nice way of telling someone that. so you pretty much just say it like that, but tell them your sorry it didn't work out and that you would like to be friends. or something like that.

You need to be diplomatic and dress it up a bit... I like the overused term, this relationship has run its course...

In my experience, it's easier for the guy if you don't pussyfoot around and just say it. If you don't think you'll be friends, don't say you want to be. Pleeease don't say cliche stuff, it makes a guy feel crummier then they already are.
It's going to suck for both of you, so make sure you're ready for that. But it has to happen if you don't like him anymore! Just grit your teeth and talk to him.
