How do play a song by ear?

I play the cello and I LOVE music. I'm on YouTube all the time and watch kids my age play songs off the radio without music sheets.Im goimg to the 8th grade in 3 days and I'll see my music teacher and am going to ask him too.But doesn't any one here know...

Know the tune well enough to sing/hum it. Figure it out note by note on the instrument.

you gotta know the notes first and if someone says sing a c then they will learn what that it and be able to sing it...its called sightsinging we had to do it in chorus all the time. I practiced with me piano...I memorized the tone and just sang it back...for the cello you just do what it says above think about the piece or music it hum the tune and try to match with the cello...overtime you will get it.
