How do I get the girl of my dreams to go out with me?

The girl of my dreams is currently dating someone. he's a great guy, and I would never do anything to break them up. but I at least want to be good friends with this girl, without her thinking I'm trying to go out with her. I've known her since second grade, and she's known me since then, but we aren't that good friends. not that she doesn't like me at all. it's just... I need advice as to how to become friends with her without her realizing that I'd do anything for her if she asked me to.

that's what I've been doing, but it always end in uncomfortable silences after I get an answer, and then I have to make up an excuse to leave because I don't know what to say.
