Here's the scoop: Labs are sweet and docile, but if you don't get them really really active as puppies then they can get lazy. Very lazy. And fat. From experience, I had a 145 pound lab.
So...for puppies, especially for hyper labs, they love love love to chew. And they can be destructive. HIDE YOUR SHOES!!! You'd be surprised but the toys made for dogs last a lot shorter than those made for humans. For example, we have a turkey beanie baby that the dogs love to play with and they've been playing with it for years. We bought our puppies a dog stuffed toy and they demolished it in seconds and left a huge mess. So, it's about the same price to get your dog a kids toy (groovy girl, beanie baby etc.) and it lasts a lot longer. It's very similar with dog shampoos too...

I had a Chihuhua with a similar problem. If he likes to nip at your hands this might entice him to play more. Get an old blanket that you DO NOT care about and when he is on the floor put your hand under it. Then start playing like it is sneaking up on him grap or bat at his paws or even catch his mouth. All my dogs have played this blanket monster game since. It works well because they get to wrestle around and you don't get hurt in the process. My German Shepherd puppy loves it.
my dog has the same problem. She is 1 years old. She is a beagle
I just got her about a week ago. She wasn't really active at first but I just think it was mainly because she was trying to get used to the new setting and everything. Now she has opened up a little more but is still real shy to play yet. But she likes to chew on soft stuff. She is a really sweet little girl but I just wish she would open up a little more and start playing some more. Its to cold to be taking her for walks know because its Winter and snow has fallen
but she does play around in the house a tiny bit.
GermanSheperd1 thanks for posting the blanket idea I will have to try that with my dog.
So I have had the same problem as you. If anyone has any advice fo ra beagle please help me out also

How do i get my new adopted dog to play?
I have recentley adopted a chocolate lab mix two weeks ago and I havent figured out what he wants to do or how he wants to play. He is the most loving dog but he dont play ball or toys or really run around. His vet thinks he's about two, so he does act...
like a puppy sometimes wanting to play bite my hands and thats all he does. I know that, thats not a good thing to do so I'm stuck. He was a stray and in a shelter for a month, then went to a foster home where I adopted him. I love him so much and I want him to be active when the weather is to bad to go on our walks. It maybe that he is just trying to adapt to another new situation, but if any one can help that would be great. Thanks.
