I like this guy, but I dont think he knows.

but we remain just friends.

I think you could just ask him casually so...do you want to go out sometime...on a date?

Don't make it a big deal - I know you like him a lot - but if you make it a huge deal you might scare him off. Keep it casual and that way you can get his true response.

Ask him soon - or he might decide to ask out your friend

He may just think that you like him as a friend - so show him that you are interested in more by asking him out - it is scary as hell - but you would at least not have to worry about him never noticing your true feelings!
