How do I dye my hair lighter?

Ok I have natural medium brown hair. I've dyed darker browns, and auburn/brown colors, but I've always gone darker. I want to dye my hair again and everyone is telling me to go lighter. I was really aprehensive about it at first but now I want to do it. Right now my hair is a light/medium brown with a small small hint of a reddish color. I want to dye it like a dark caramel ish blonde. But I dont have enough money to go to a salon. If I want to do it myself do I need to do anything special to it first or can I just dye it out of a box? Will it turn orange? Or any other ugly color?

Save your money. It'll be worth it. Or you can check out cosmetology schools. They have students do the work with their teachers looking over their shoulder. It is WAY cheaper than a salon. The downside is, it takes twice as long because the students are (usually) SO meticulous. Look under education in the phone book.

If you can afford a salon, go to one. Meganhead knows what she is talking about, and the cosmetology school is also a great idea. These students need people to 'practice' on, but are fully supervised 100% of the time, so you are in no danger of your hair ending up green or orange. It will cost a lot less than a salon, but you will still get the prof. results. Nice answer, Megan!!!

It usually cost around $70.
But you should look up some salons and give them a call to know the exact price. Make sure you tell them what you want to do...

get a hair stip kit from kmart real chap it will strip the color then you can dye your hair any color you want I have natural brown dark hair and I did this and I dyed my hair blond. it works.

what do you mean by it strips all the color out? like it goes back to my natural color or what?

will me myself think you should just leave your hair the way it is . or are you trying to cover gray or just want a change. maybe get you a some blond but it in like streeks in your hair that would look great. but your hair color is one of a kind id leave it be.

thanks. but im really just looking for a change. im bored. I've dyed it so much but always the same kinda colors and I want to dye it but I want something different. and the color it is now isnt my natural color. but I really just want something different. im scared though haha. but I really want to do it.

have you thought about going blondish brown that would look great. or they have these hair kits you can buy just like hair dye box same asile but it puts blond streeks in your hair that would look great and you can do it your self done it you comb it threw your hair it works good and it well look lighter then it is now and the blond will look good I think leave the color you have and put that kit in it will be great.

thanks for the advice. I was thinking of highlights to, but I've gotten them done before and I dont like them on me...I feel like a zebra. I dont like the stripe look. I think im pretty set on dying it. but thanks for the input I really appreciate it

really? I might try that cus I really just want something lighter. im sick of always going darker. thats why I was thinking of like a caramel color cus its not completely blonde but not completely brown either.
