ask him if he would be interested in dating, but make it a hypothetical question. if he says yes then ask him to go out with you, if he says no, then say sumthin like oh, okay.

Haha me and my girlfriend were best friends for 2 years before we got to this stage eventually by then we were just such good friends she just said christ chris you gonna ask me out or what? it was quite funny, I just laughed and asked her right then and there =)
