Go to the persons profile and press the add me as your friend bit. If you get a notification saying you have someone wanting to be your friend you can click the link. It also comes up under your profile name.

Doubt is always a problem. I guess accepting a non ambiguous friendship is a chance to grab. Now, being friends is another thing, requires time.
