*Relax. Everyone around you is here to have a good time, so why shouldn't you? Just relax, and even if you don't get to socialize too much you can look on the bright side--at least the food is good! Also, if you look relaxed and at ease you will look less intimidating and easier to approach making it easier to slide into conversation.*

*Try to see if there's anyone you may share common ground with. If you are a big film buff and you find yourself talking to someone else who is a big film buff, that makes for good conversation. Make sure to ask questions to let the other person know that you're interested in their opinion. Don't be afraid of a little bit of friendly debate if you don't agree with the other person's opinion.*

*If you're at a social event and you're uncomfortable it's OK to remind yourself that you're never truly trapped anywhere. You can always leave, call a cab or just step outside to help calm the nerves.*

*It is also important to remember, if you're at a social event, chances are there will probably be at least a few other poeple who may not know anyone else either. If you meet someone else in the same position it should feel easier to be able to communicate with them even if you end up joking around about how you both don't know anyone.*

*Be positive and laugh. If you're having a good time, others will want to have a good time with you.*

*If someone else is the life of the party, don't let it make you insecure. Instead embrace it. Laugh and enjoy and this will help you to feel more comfortable. If you are constantly comparing yourself to others, this will make you insecure.*

Or you can try to make yourself look as good as possible it always works for me because I always feel my best when I look my best and that helps me to feel more confident which in turn I am able to communicate freely with people.
