Although opinion on this site is overwhelmingly against Hillary Clinton, those feelings are not shared by the nation at large. If you sift through all the media obsession with Obama, you'd know that Clinton has actually had a remarkable campaign, and a largely successful one. She still enjoys enourmous popularity (obviously, or she wouldn't still be in this), and has led Obama in several battleground states. While I do no longer think it's wise for her to pursue the Democratic nomination, I do not think all her supporters are just going to vote wholesale for Obama. And I find it interesting that the same pundits who were moaning about how undemocratic the superdelegates system is few weeks ago, when they might have tipped things for Clinton, are now saying that because Obama has won enough of them, Clinton should drop out. If they were really concerned about the system, they'd be criticizing it even if their guy was leading. The truth is, neither Obama or Clinton ever had a clear majority of regular delegate votes. Which means that the superdelegates were always as important to Obama as they were to Clinton.
I hope Clinton will continue to have a role in politics, at any level. This campaign has brought out some bad in her, as it has in every candidate that's been running for president for 200+ years, including media darling Obama.
WASHINGTON - Hillary Rodham Clinton will concede Tuesday night that Barack Obama has the delegates to secure the Democratic nomination, campaign officials said, effectively ending her bid to be the nation's first female president.
Obama is 40 delegates shy of clinching the nomination, but he is widely expected to make up the difference Tuesday with superdelegate support and votes in South Dakota and Montana. Once he reaches the magic number of 2,118, Clinton will acknowledge that he has secured the necessary delegates to be the nominee.
The former first lady will stop short of formally suspending or ending her race in her speech in New York City.
She will pledge to continue to speak out on issues like health care. But for all intents and purposes, the two senior officials said, the campaign is over.
Most campaign staff will be let go and will be paid through June 15, said the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to divulge her plans.
The advisers said Clinton has made a strategic decision to not formally end her campaign, giving her leverage to negotiate with Obama on various matters including a possible vice presidential nomination for her. She also wants to press him on issues he should focus on in the fall, such as health care.
mjax, as usual I agree with ALMOST everything you said. lol
I don't think you can say Obama or Clinton never had a clear majority of regular delegates. It has been clear for at least 6 weeks that Hillary could not overtake him in pledged delegates. Although there is no doubt the supers were going to ultimately decide, it also seemed pretty clear for a while that they were not going to against the peledged delegate winner.
While Hillary has said some things in this campaign that will hurt Obama, she definately is a force to be reckoned with. But I don't think Obama is going to pick her as a running mate. She went to far a few times. Already this morning I heard on a right wing talk radio show a clip of her saying that She she had the experience to lead the nation, and John McCain had the experience, and Obama had a speech in 2002.
I don't think her presence on the ticket will help him at all. But there will be tremendous pressure on him to ask her.
