well my sisters hermit crab was half way out of its shell and it died.

Put your crab in a cup of water. If he’s alive than after a minute or two he will come out of his shell. Don’t leave him in over 3 minutes or he might drown. Even if he doesn’t come out of his shell keep him and try again the next day just to be safe.

All of my hermit crabs that died were not in their shell. Every time I thought my crab was dead in its shell it came out after being dunked in water.

You can tell if its dead by the smell (a rotting smell)…If there is none then I guess he’s molting.
