Herbacious peonies survive in temperate or moderate climate?

Asked by retiredman over 3 years ago, 2 answers.

I live in the bay area, and was wondering about planting some herbacious peonies in my garden. I've heard they are very nice, and have been reading about them on other websites. My question is, do peonies have to have warm weather / climate, or is...

moderate climate OK? It doesn't ever freeze here, so I think they'd be Ok, however, it'd be great to get other people's feedback before I spend a few hundred dollars on plants that might not survive the winter.

They should be fine in the bay area, my father in law grows them in Oregon where it gets much colder than the bay area so if they survive there (which I know they do since he has a peony farm) then I am sure they will be fine in the bay area.

Enjoy your peonies.

You will find this website most helpful in techniques for keeping them over the winter and on different variations. According to the site they can survive the cold weather with maintenance.
