It's unknown (for the most part) how it's passed and yes, you can have it show no symptoms, you need a blood test to confirm you have it (or don't) it typically attacks the kidneys and or liver.
There are no known treatments at this time, my step dad was early in the trials, I think, on interferon which was on of the treatments that's been shown to potentially slow progress of the disease, however, there is no cure.
