Well, you get gold on Gaia for basically doing anything on the site. What I did when I was trying it out was I just looked around the site itself for a while; went through the little navigation bar and clicked various things. You won't get a lot of gold right off, but little amounts really do add up once you explore around enough. Also, another good way to rake in the money is to play the games (like jigsaw). Every time you solve one of those puzzles you get a nice chunk of change. Do a few really easy ones and see where that gets you. Probably the best way to get large amounts of gold is to post in the forums though.
