Most likely you need to install or update the audio drivers / codecs for your particular computer or motherboard. Depending on the maker of your computer, you might have a system disk with the drivers for audio, or you could maybe go to the microsoft windows update by selecting tools windows update from internet explorer then find the update for audio. System disk is usually the better choice as microsoft messes up sometimes.
Also if you have a fresh xp install, there will be tons of critical and security updates you will definately want to install/update by using the above method...windows update.
