My best friend back at school had thick long dark brown hair one day she went to school with it in a ponytail but with about 20 tiny little plats tied into the ponytail. After she did that everybody else that had long hair stated wearing theres the same it looked really good. Maybe give that a try 
You can even buy coloured extension plats to add into it. Good luck
