Gunky nail varnish, is there any trick?

I am going to a party tomorrow and I need to paint my nails green. The nail narnish is quite old so it is rather gunky and think.
Is there any special trick or way to get it nice and smooth again??

Try shaking it up a lot, or maybe adding a little bit of water to it and shaking it up.

Add a very small amount of nail polish remover to thin it out.

Too much will make it very runny, though, so only use drops at a time
