About the best and the easiest recipe that I have found is this:
Margarine or butter--12 ounces (it helps if this is at room temp.)
Sugar--- --12 ounces
Vanilla--- --1 tablespoon
Cream these three ingredients together until very smooth. Then add.....
Eggs--- --6 each
Cake Flour--- --12 ounces
Again, cream these 5 ingredients together until smooth. This will make enough for about a half sheet pan or a 13' x 18' pan.
Bake this in a 400 degree oven for 18 to 20 minutes. Check with a knife or toothpick.
THIS IS CALLED A 7UP CAKE (it's a Southern thing, New Orleans)
3 cups all-purpose flour, 3 cups sugar, 3 sticks butter, 5 eggs, 1 tbsp. lemon extract, 3/4 cup 7up.
First cream sugar and butter, add 1 egg at a time, blending well. Then add flour gradually, blending well. Add lemon extract and 7up, mix well. In a Bundt or Flute pan, grease and flour inside of pan. Set stove to 350 degrees and bake cake for 1 hour or until toothpick comes out clean. You can top cake with powdered sugar, but it's great without any topping. You and your family will truly enjoy this.

INGREDIENTS
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
1 1/2 cups butter
3 cups white sugar
6 eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (160 degrees C) grease and flour a 10 inch tube pan.
In a large bowl, cream butter and cream cheese until smooth. Add sugar gradually and beat until fluffy.
Add eggs two at a time, beating well with each addition. Add the flour all at once and mix in. Add vanilla.
Pour into a 10 inch tube pan. Bake at 325 degrees F (160 degrees C) for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Check for doneness at 1 hour. A toothpick inserted into center of cake will come out clean.
