What's some good dark literature?

I am writing a sad sad tear jerking story. and I thought it would help to read some dark liturature to get some ideas. since this is my first sad/seriouse story. so any suggestions on sad or dark liturature?

read or listen to some king diamond lyrics especially the 'them' cd, 'conspiracy' cd, or the 'abigail' cd. very dark opera type heavy metal. I use it in the darkness occasionally. very chilling , very dark, very inspiring and morbid.

I was going to say read POE as well, that already been said by jax, I had to drop back and punt.
