Going lighter

I have naturally brown hair, and get it highlighted regularly but it never comes out quite the colour I want, it always looks a bit caramelly or gingery in pictures, but I want it to look surfery beachy, so I want to go lighter. I can't really afford it so wanted to get a kit from the shops and do it myself...what's the best way?

Well at home the Creme Bleach seems to work the best. It does weaken the hair a bit, but it will lighten your hair to the tone you want.
