Getting to paper and pen in a tornado of distractions

Me and my girl Asked by lucky0u 4 months ago, 2 answers.

I'm a beginning writer struggling with getting my thoughts to paper before my bustling family distracts me. By the time I get to paper and pen, the concept is not the same or I simply forgot it. Not to mention my creative thoughts always come at the...

wrong times... while cooking, driving or taking a shower. Rarely does my best work come from sitting quietly. What is up with that? Is this normal for a writer? What can I do? Any ideas will most certainly be appreciated.

Completely normal, although I'm not a writer...yet. lol I still like to think that someday I will write the new great American novel, but not if you beat me to it. happy

Carry a mini tape recorder around with you. Many cell phones have this feature. That way you can get your 'perfect' flow of thought and tone down somewhere without having to boot up the computer or search for a pen. Inspiration sometimes comes only once, you gotta be ready.

Normal...don't worry happy I'm a writer and have been writing since I was 8. The thoughts normally come unexpectedly...when your brain is processing things and you see or hear something that inspires you. Happens all the time happy

jlw82's idea is great! You should definately try it, hearing it verbally might help more too. Also, carry around a small notebook whenever you go out or even just walk around...when inspiration comes, jot it down as fast as you can. I do this all the time and it helps so well! :D

Also, find a time of the day or night to use to write. For me, I found that midnight to 3 a.m. works the best for me...sometimes just sitting, closing your eyes and letting yourself daydream, it becomes easier to write.
When you set aside a specific time, take your pen and paper pad, go for a walk or drive somewhere inspirational. Keep your mind open to any new ideas and thoughts. Notice people and places...sounds, smells...ect. Also, try listening to songs let them inspire you.

If you have a hard time thinking up ideas: You can buy inspiration books or type in Writing inspiration on your internet search engine...there will be TONS of ideas.

Since your just beginning, you're in the hardest stage, when all the ideas either flood you or dissapear completely. Learning to open up your mind comes everytime you write. Don't worry, even the most expirienced writers get that block.

Good luck! happy If you have any more writing questions, I'm here to help anytime happy
