please read the words of coretta scott king, widow of martin luther king, jr. -

'I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of lesbian and gay people and I should stick to the issue of racial justice... But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King, Jr., said, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere'... I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream to make room at the table of brotherhood and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people.'

'We are all tied together in a single garment of destiny... I can never be what I ought to be until you are allowed to be what you ought to be,' she said, quoting from her husband. 'I've always felt that homophobic attitudes and policies were unjust and unworthy of a free society and must be opposed by all Americans who believe in democracy.'

'Gays and lesbians stood up for civil rights in Montgomery , Selma , in Albany , Georgia , and St. Augustine , Florida , and many other campaigns of the Civil Rights Movement. Many of these courageous men and women were fighting for my freedom at a time when they could find few voices for their own, and I salute their contributions.'

'We have a lot of work to do in our common struggle against bigotry and discrimination. I say 'common struggle,' because I believe very strongly that all forms of bigotry discrimination are equally wrong and should be opposed by right-thinking Americans everywhere. Freedom from discrimination based on sexual orientation is surely a fundamental human right in any great democracy, as much as freedom from racial, religious, gender, or ethnic discrimination.'

'Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood. This sets the stage for further repression and violence that spread all too easily to victimize the next minority group.'

I respect everyone's views and opinions, but I never understood what the big deal was about letting gay/lesbians get married. I always ask them to think, what if someone said you couldn't get married..how would you feel? I believe 100% that everyone should be able to get married.

yeah anyone should be able to get married
it would be terrible if someone denied you the right to marry the one you truly love just because they are same sex as u.

Why wouldn't they have the same rights as you and me? Does it affect you if two ladies or two men get married? I think NOT!!!

yes, they have every right to get married
being gay doesnt make you any less human
neither does liking both of the same sexes
its none of anyone elses buisness, it doesnt affect them
people need to open there minds more and accept people and there sexuality
ifts stupid though
because most governmenrts dont want gays getting married because they cant reproduce, and have a child
but in china, thers no age of consent
people have sex as young as 5 even, and a lot of girls are killed, just for being a girl
because there are too many people in that country
...they have no age of consent...all the government has done is allowed a family to have just one child
a persons sexuality isnt something anyone can change
and the government needs to get off there fat a*s, let people freely express there RIGHTS
and bloody get an age of consent for china!!

rickd, that was a long winded effort at saying very little...

First, whether it is a choice or not has nothing to do with it. Are you trying to say if it is a choice, that homosexuality should be outlawed? And it is not the latest craze. It has existed in every society since the dawn of man. Some with more acceptance, some with less. But they have been around forever. If I were to say I am choosing to wear bright orange clothing only, wouldn't you agree that is my choice. What would you think if the government made it illegal for people who wear orange clothes to get married? It is no different. Exactly how do heterosexuals add anything more to the human race than gays do? And what truth about gays is the public not being told?

Second, when you bring religion into the argument, you have already lost. It is clearly a violation of the separation of church and state to make marriage laws based on some of the peoples religious views. Our laws are based on civil rights. If it doesn't violate someones right, it can not be illegal. How does homosexuality deny you or anyone else their rights. Denying them the right to marry whom they choose certainly violates theirs.

Can you make any argument defending you stance on gay rights that does not involve religion?

1:There is supposed to be a separation between church and state... the gov't can't tell churches what to do and vise versa... so why is religion a determining factor on marriage, which is a gov't issue.
2: Sexual discrimination... why can't a femamle marry another female based on her gender? or male marry another male? You can't deny somone a job because or their gender, so why marriage?
3:Rights are not just about marriage, but of insurance, inheritance and living wills. A amn and woman that are married under common law (never actually get married, but live as a married couple) can have the other person put on their insurance, have them automatically inherit upon death... these are the rights that are really being denied
4: What kind of person is so pathetic that they feel the need to tell someone else how to live their life?

Intimate relationships; whether you believe are God given, or not, should be held in higher regards than putting on a damn shirt!

And where does it say in our constitution how high the regard for marriage should be? Where does it say anything about marriage at all?

And our laws are based on civil rights? Thats a half truth. The declaration of the United States of America, (not the Liberalated states of jmahl land) states 'to which laws of nature, and natures God' , and 'endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights'.

The declaration of independence has nothing to do with our legal system. It was an important document to state our claim to self rule, but it is the constitution that set up the rules we are governed by. Our laws ARE based on civil rights. The only expception are laws that define how government operates. Show me one law that doesn't pertain to either how government functions or protecting civil rights?

Lets start with the first piece of text. 'Law of nature' Concieving, carrying, delivering, and nurturing all fall under laws of nature. Which is what happens when two heterosexuals follow the normal course that nature has prescribed. (I cannot believe I actually have to explain this). Now I wont get into this too extent, but fondling, anal penetration, and oral satisfaction though pleasing to some, without a doubt contribute nothing to mankind as a whole, and may even go against nature, god,and actually put burden on our society.

So if I follow you, the only reason that heterosexual marriage should be the only way is because of procreation? So I guess we should not allow people to get married who are choosing to not have children. And many gay couples have kids. And lesbians still get pregnant and have kids. Your argument is ludicrous.

Whats the solution? How about not promoting it as a healthy alternative huh? Where is the positive affect in that? Lets promote healthy heterosexual lifestyles.

Just because you say it is a healthy alternative, does not make it true. I think it is far more healthy to accept who you are than living your life in denial. I know many gay couples and all of them are very positive role models. Why do you even care what other people do behind closed doors?

Am I saying put it back in the closet; no. Just get it off my f-ing tv for one night , I have had it up to here.

You know some people said the same thing about blacks when they first started being portrayed on TV and movies as something other than servants. Some people also said allowing blacks to integrate would lead to the downfall of our society. And I guess it did lead to the downfall of the southern racist society, thankfully. So allowing gays the same rights as heterosexuals might be the downfall of the society that is so bigoted against them that think they don't deserve to live their life out of the closet:.

Just answer this question: How does allowing gays to marry affect you in the slightest bit?

Well , Jimahl, that is exactly the response I would expect from a well educated, smart, progressive fellow like yourself. You are a move on .org type of guy.

I pay no attention to MoveOn. I have no issues with them, but I never go to their website.

'Just answer this question: How does allowing gays to marry affect you in the slightest bit?' in your question lies the answer. I, me I me I me what 's in it for me the individual? my rights, my pleasure's, mine., mine, mine! My answer: not a damn thing. I could give half an 'f' what gay people do behind closed doors, in fact I think it would repulse me, as I am sure what Heterosexuals do repulses them.

We are a country of individuals. And the right to marry is an individual right. It is not about what's in it for people. It is about fairness and equality.

The real question is: what does gay marriage do to our society?

Phew! this is still being studied, by a lot of different groups, in a lot of countries, but number one on the list would have to be the continuing break down of basic family values, which have been the glue in our society for thousands of years. 2nd; Changing the legal, and moral definition of the word marriage, which as existed as being 'between a man and a woman' for thousands of years.

Care to show us the source of these studies you speak of? There is no proof that gay marriage will lead to a breakdown of the family. That kind of argument rings rather hollow when half of all heterosexual couples end up divorced. 50 years ago many people said allowing interacial marriage would lead to the breakdown of family. Were they right? The concept of marriage has hardly been consistant 'for thousands of years'. Poligamy was and is still being practiced in the world today. I am sure you are not for allowing that? The bottom line is, gay couples are just people, like you and me. They deserve the same rights as you and me, and saying that it MIGHT lead to a break down of the family is not a good enough reason to deny someone their civil rights.

3rd; giving in to a superficial kind of individualism, that is less than 2% of the population, so they can thumb there noses at the other 98% Jimahl, you and I know this is not the last frontier dont we?

Superficial individualism? It might be superficial to you, but to the person who is being denied the right to marry whom they want because of their gender is not superficial. Again, if you go back 100 years, there were probably only 2% of the population who thought that interacial marriage was ok. The rights of the minority must be protected from the tyrrany of the majority. Denying gays the right to marry in no way affects the rights of heterosexuals.

I have heard of N.A.M.B.L.A I know what is next. when do we allow marriage to girls who are between 6 and 10? you people are never satisfied. In the name of progress huh?

So now you are equating homosexuality with pediphilia. You are truly disturbed if you think that. We are talking about what two consenting ADULTS are doing. Child molestation will always be a crime. You are truly grabbing at straws.

You have the politically correct media on your side, but it will never get my vote, and I have lots friends who feel the same. I am done talking about this issue, see you at the polls.

Trust me, your homophobic fears will not be assuaged come November.

And of course you are done, because you can't make any logical argument with out bringing your individual morality into it. Not everyone agrees with what you consider moral, or immoral. It doesn't matter what you or I think is moral. It is about civil rights.

Ok I think gay marriage is digusting! No offfense to anyone. But I just dont understand how someone can be gay anyway! Its a violation of I think most if not all religions! I think that someone who is gay or a lesbain is just confused in life. Mariiage is between a man ans\d a woman. I personally would not like my future kids to think tthat gay marriage is ok... Yea gay people can be together but they shouldnt marry.
